Demonstration Gardens

The Thurston County Demonstration Gardens serve as a examples to the public of the gardening techniques and recommendations from the Master Gardeners. It is a place where we test out different plants. From these test results we can make recommendations for our local area on specific plants.

Do you have a plant problem? Possibly a plant is eaten-up by bugs or diseases? Maybe you have a plant or weed you cannot identify? Or, you have a spot in your garden and you need advice on what to plant? That's where our Master Gardener volunteers can help. Come visit one of our Gardens or Clinic for the answers

Remember, the clinics and gardens are operated by volunteers and are for home gardeners.

Olympia Farmer's Market

The Garden, called Gallacci Gardens at the request of the Farmers Market board, consists of plants donated by the vendors and the Market itself. Eventually, the Garden will consist primarily of native plants, to enable people who visit to see the beauty and ease of growth of native plants and vegetation. The work, including plantings, rock work and trellis', was donated and preformed by MG volunteers. Included in the Garden is a worm bin and composting area. The Garden is designed as a viewing garden to Market patrons and visitors.

Open: 10 am to 2 pm, during the days of the Market., when volunteers are available At other times, call the Thurston County Extension Office at 786-5445.

The Closed Loop Park Demonstration Garden is developed and maintained by Thurston County Solid Waste and Cooperative Extension - WSU/Thurston County Master Gardeners And Composters.

Closed-Loop Park provides a special setting for educating Thurston County residents about landscape management practices that reduce impacts on land and water resources. To achieve this earth-friendly goal, Thurston County WSU Master Gardeners emphasize:

  • Proper soil preparation

  • Proper planting techniques

  • Integrated pest management (IPM) techniques and plant health care

  • Water conservation via weeping soaker hoses that are manually operated based on measured rainfall and soil moisture levels

  • Composting to conserve valuable landfill space and turn garden wastes into valuable organic matter

  • Suppression of weeds via: Weed barrier material,  Hand pulling, Mulches or Propane fueled weed dragon.

Open: Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. year round.

Directions: Closed Loop Park is located inside the Thurston County Waste and Recovery Center (WARC) off of Hogum Bay Road. Take Exit 111 off of I-5, and travel north and turn right into the WARC entrance.
