The Food Safety and Nutrition Education Program provides research-based food safety and nutrition information and public education. Our goal is to empower individuals and families to make lasting behavior changes that promote health and prevent disease. The achieve this goal, Washington State University (WSU) Cooperative Extension offers services and programs in food safety and nutrition. 1. Consumer Food-Safety Outreach If you have a food safety, food preparation or preservation, or nutrition question call your WSU Cooperative Extension office at (360)786-5445, Ext 7900. You may also call the King County Food & Nutrition Helpline at 800-325-6165, Ext 3443. The helpline hours of operation are Monday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm; Tuesday - Friday, 8:30 am - 12:30 pm. Food Safety Programs for the Classroom Get a Jump on Germs - a hands-on science curriculum that trains junior an d high school students to teach basic food safety concepts to third, fourth, and fifth graders. The training is appropriate for use in science and non-science classrooms. Contact WSU Cooperative Extension at 360-786-5445, Ext 7916 to schedule a training session at your school. Germ City is an interactive hand-washing demonstration and education program for elementary school students. Call WSU Cooperative Extension at 360-786-5445, Ext 7916 for more information. 3. Educational Curricula and Training Materials for Teachers and Food Safety Educators - Food Safety Lending Library The Food Safety Lending Library provides teachers, food service managers and consumers access to food safety information, curricula and video-cassettes. All persons living or working within Thurston County are eligible to borrow items from the Library. Materials may be checked out by called (360) 786-5445. 4. Food and Nutrition Hotlines For your convenience a list of toll free numbers for food and nutrition has been complied. Click here to access these Food and Nutrition Hotlines. 5. Food Safety Articles for Consumers Food Safety Articles in a question-answer format are available on-line. The articles appeared in The Olympian and other local newspapers. Food Safety Information for Professionals Food Safety Ala Carte, a quarterly newsletter for food service operations is available on line. Each issue contains a feature article, Science Behind the Scenes, Resource Corner, Leadership on the Line and an In-Service Education program and outline. 7. Family Nutrition Education Program WSU Extension offers a series of lessons designed to help people get the best nutrition at the lowest cost for the families. Information taught can help limited resource families buy food wisely, handle it safely, and cook nutritious meals. The program can also help them make the best use of food they receive from other sources such as private food banks and government food distribution programs.
